Apple will adopt a new supplier of compact camera modules (CCMs) for MacBook models equipped with the next-generation M5 chip in 2025. In his latest investor memo, Kuo Ming-Chi wrote that Apple will purchase the CCMs needed for the M5 MacBook from Sunny Optical. The Chinese optical lens company will mass-produce CCMs in Vietnam and provide a complete imaging system integrated in a compact form factor for the new laptop.
Currently, the camera modules for MacBooks are mainly supplied by LG InnoTek and Sharp. However, Sunny Optical has a unique advantage in Apple's optical component supply chain because it is the only one that can provide CCMs and lenses in one package at the same time, allowing for seamless integration. If the shipments of the M5 MacBook perform well, Kuo Ming-Chi predicts that Sunny Optical may also become the main supplier of CCMs for Apple's future iPhone and iPad models.
Meanwhile, Apple is expected to update its 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M4 chip by the end of 2024. In addition, the high-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are also expected to be updated by the end of 2024 with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips. Although there are no rumors of design changes in the 2024 update, Apple may launch a new MacBook based on the M5 chip in 2025, which may adopt a thinner design. This design may be inspired by the ultra-thin iPad Pro launched in 2024. Apple is striving to provide the "thinnest and lightest" products in each product category.
The specific release time of the thinner MacBook Pro is still unclear, but the market generally speculates that Apple may launch a redesigned laptop based on the M5 chip in 2025. In addition, Apple is also rumored to be developing Face ID for Mac, and the MacBook Pro is expected to be one of the first Mac models equipped with this feature.
